Suwari-waza Practice: Hiroaki Kobayashi Shihan's 6th Session on Zagi Katate-dori Kote-gaeshi
07 15, 2024
Hiroaki Kobayashi Shihan elaborates on the practice methods of Zagi Katate-dori Kote-gaeshi, a fundamental technique in Aikido's Suwari-waza.
1.Basics of Tai-sabaki
This session covers the movements of Zagi Gyaku-hanmi Katate-dori Kote-gaeshi. When held by your partner, open your hand firmly and execute the technique by rotating from your core rather than just your wrist. Switch your grip on your partner's hand, ensuring the motion originates from your torso. This involves an initial grip switch, culminating in Dai-nikyo. Avoid relying on small wrist movements and focus on generating power from your core. During the grip switch, maintain a strong connection between your upper body and the movement.

2.How to Switch Grips
We explain the technique of switching grips. After being grabbed, don't just rely on your wrist; instead, use your whole hand to perform Kote-gaeshi. As you do this, imagine your chest contracting to help guide the motion. After you’ve brought your partner down, switch grips again, aligning your thumbs together and pinning your partner face down, finishing with Dai-nikyo. In Zagi Katate-dori Kote-gaeshi, since you can't use your lower body, it's crucial to effectively utilize your upper body to execute the technique properly.
