The two WKF weight classes, -60kg and -67kg, were combined in the Olympic Games to create the ultimate speed duel. 
The leading contenders for the gold medal were Kazakhstan's Darkhan Assadilov, 
who finished first in the Olympic standings, and France's Steven Da Costa, but the gold medal went to Da Costa, who beat Turkey's Eray Samdan in the final.
From Japan, Naoto Sago, who won the silver medal at the WKF World Championships three years ago, competed. 
Sago showed aggressive kumite from the first round, but unfortunately lost in the preliminary league and could not win a medal.
