On August 5, the first category, women's kata, opened the Olympic karate event.
There was no audience and the quiet Budokan was echoed with the sound of kiai and the name of the kata.
The two most notable competitors, Sandra Sanchez of Spain and Kiyou Shimizu of Japan, met in the final. The kata for both was Chatanyara Kushanku.
After a great performance by both, Sanchez won the gold medal.
She is 39 years old, and her husband, Coach Jesús, were both happy to have won the gold medal.
