Shimizu Natsuki touches upon the essence of Okinawan Karate

In this third installment of "OSS! JOURNEY", Natsuki visits the Okinawan Gojyu-ryu karate master Yoshio Kuba. 
Natsuki has been learning Gojyu-ryu kata since she was a little girl, so she has confidence in her kata and her understanding of the bunkai. 
However, during this visit she realizes that the bunkai she has learned so far is at a rudimentary level.

“There is no point in trying to demonstrate a Kata if you don't understand the bunkai.” 

In this series Kuba sensei shows Natsuki that even though she understands one way of doing the kata, that she had not yet mastered the real kata.
 
In this installment she was taught various applications of the Kururunfa kata and experienced firsthand that just doing a kata and understanding the application are two completely different things. 

She also learned about the relationship between the other kata of Goju-ryu and discovered the essence of karate in these basic kata. 
She came out looking much more like a budoka, and it seems she was able to re-gain the feeling of adventure of doing kata.

In second half of the video, we also hear about Kuba sensei’s experience as an acupuncturist. 

He explains that the acupuncture points of the human body are also vital points, which are very relevant to applying karate techniques. 

He also explains that the method of overcoming a faster and more powerful opponent is to learn to breathe softly, which gave Natsuki a hint for future training.

Although the karate of mainland Japan is more focused on the sports aspect, Natsuki agress with Kuba sensei’s idea, that karate should reintroduce its original use of muscles and soft body manipulation. 

This encounter with Kuba Sensei made Natsuki feel that she has a lot to learn but that the hints she received will help her evolve as a competitor.
