Irina Zaretska (Azerbaijan), who was ranked first in the Olympic standings, Hamideh Abbasali (Iran), who was ranked second, Gong Li (China), 
who was ranked third, and Ayumi Uekusa, who was ranked seventh in the same standings, competed for Japan.
Uekusa's performance up to the Olympics seemed to be good enough to win a medal, but she was unable to advance to the semifinals.
