    Kendo Experience Helps You Get The Job?

    How can you make use of your school years’ kendo experience?

    If you are a kendo student, you may have thought about whether you can  use your kendo experience in your future or in finding a job. I am sure those of you who were former kendo members and are currently engaged in social activities remember it. 

    Did you know that kendo experience can stand out when getting a job?

    Of course, doing kendo is not just about preparing to find a job, but it will be good to know how kendo experience can be helpful in the near future.

    1.Jobs That Can Bring the Kendo Experience to Life

    A police officer

    If you have experience in kendo, a job that you can have an advantage in getting is a police officer.

    Even though they say it’s not required, having a kendo experience is a big appeal point when hiring someone. Depending on the region, some places officially state that having dan in kendo is preferred.

    If you are a kendo player who has shown pretty good performance in competitions, the police may contact you first to ask if you would like to get a job. 

    Moreover, if you want to do kendo as a profession, you can also aim to become a member of a special kendo unit, also known as a special kendo trainer.

    However, the route to become a special kendo trainer is very narrow. Even though many people want to be special kendo trainers, obviously it is impossible if they do not have standing out skills.

    Among many special kendo trainers, the one that belongs to Metropolitan Police Agency has a number of the best kendo players across the country. Only very few of the applicants can become the Metropolitan Police Agency’s special kendo trainers.

    Furthermore, even if they become special kendo trainers, they get replaced based on their skills. They need to show strong performance and maintain good skills even after becoming a special kendo trainer.


    Imperial guard

    The route to becoming the imperial guard who must have dan is also very narrow.

    The imperial guard itself is originally a popular job. However, in the case of imperial guard, you need to be qualified for the examination as 3rd dan  holder in kendo who participated in an individual competition ore registered in a team competition hosted, co-hosted, organized or sponsored by All Japan Kendo Federation over the past five years.

    Even high school students can get 3rd dan of kendo, but the failure rate is very high compared to getting 1st dan and 2nd dan. It can be seen as proof that you have been working hard on Kendo.

    It is very difficult to be employed as an imperial guard, but it is worth challenging if you are skilled.


    A prison officer

    A prison officer who works in a prison has a job classification that he or she needs to have experience in martial arts such as kendo or judo to be qualified for the examination, so he or she is required to get his or her kendo or judo skills tested to verify his or her skills.

    The prison officers within the range of martial arts are usually assigned to guard duties within the prison.

    Of course, there is a general recruitment that does not require a martial arts experience.  

    Although a kendo competition called the Japanese Government Office Kendo Competition is held every year, the winning and top teams are prison officers almost every year, despite the participation of police officers, fire fighters, and self-defense forces.


    Security

    Because securities belong to private companies, the company’s judgment on the kendo experience is crucial.

    However, since large security companies often have Kendo business groups, it could help determine offering a job depending on kendo skills.

    As above, you may join the business group and participate in social competitions, which can be a good environment for those who want to continue kendo even after being employed. 


    Martial arts equipment shop/ Kendo artisan

    You can also use kendo experience in different forms for others.

    For example, if you find a job at a shop where an artisan makes bamboo swords and armors that are necessary to do kendo or an equipment shop that sells these, then you can make better equipment by giving advice based on your experience.

     

    2.Kendo Experience Helps You Give a Good Impression in an Interview?

    Kendo experience is not only advantageous when getting a job as a police officer or security. Rather, kendo experience is very helpful in overall employment activities. 

    Most kendo-experienced people have a very good posture. Furthermore, kendo is not just a sport, but a field that values manners through sword. The correct posture and manners of kendo-experienced people have strength in finding a job.

    Being polite is the basis of the basics, but it’s not like you get used to it overnight. However, kendo-experienced people are already used to it through multiple years of training.

    The good posture and manners of kendo-experienced people are not able to master just for a night in order to get a job. The more the HR manager is professional, the better this can be conveyed. In other words, kendo players are already getting a big advantage in finding a job.

    The kendo experience will help find a job in any form.

    3.The Evaluation of Having Dan in Kendo is Different?

    Have you ever heard that appealing the fact that you have dan to a HR manager can raise your chance of getting a job?

    Having dan means that you have been serious about kendo for a long time.

    The HR manager will evaluate that those who have been doing kendo diligently will also be patient and serious in their work. This would be more true if the HR manager has a kendo experience.

    It means that the HR manager can evaluate your personality and attitude toward the things through the fact that you have dan in kendo.

    If you have dan, it is good to have it written on the hobby and specialty section of your resume. It is also good to mention your manners, strength, and gut learned from your kendo experience along with the fact that you have dan in your personal statement section.

    4.Conclusion

    Even though you focus hard on club activity at first, the time to think about the future will come naturally as the need to choose a career comes closer.

    You may think it would have been better to do something more helpful or study when you face real society.

    However, factors such as your gut, manners, and good posture learned from kendo will be great advantages in finding a job.
