Etsuji Horii Shihan provides a detailed explanation of the concepts of Sen no sen and Go no sen through the fundamental Aikido technique, Suwari-waza Shomen-uchi Dai-ikkyo Omote.

    1.Sen no sen in Suwari-waza Shomen-uchi Dai-ikkyo Omote

This session focuses on the concepts of "Sen no sen" and "Go no sen." First, we discuss Suwari-waza Shomen-uchi Dai-ikkyo Omote, which exemplifies Sen no sen. The technique involves initiating an attack to draw out the opponent's hand and then controlling it. After controlling, you lead with your hand to provoke another reaction, continuously taking the initiative. The key is to move proactively without waiting for the opponent's attack. Starting from a seated position, you take the initiative and maintain control as you transition to the next technique. Control the elbow with your left hand and guide with your right hand, ensuring the palm faces up. The concept is to receive the opponent's atemi and control their hand with ikkyo. This is the essence of Sen no sen in Suwari-waza Shomen-uchi Dai-ikkyo Omote.

    2.Importance of Suwari-waza Shomen-uchi Dai-ikkyo

Suwari-waza Shomen-uchi Dai-ikkyo is one of the most fundamental techniques in Aikido. Mastery of Suwari-waza is essential for progressing in other techniques. This technique incorporates essential Aikido movements such as stable center of gravity and footwork. Particularly in the Omote version, it emphasizes proactive movement, initiating action rather than waiting for the opponent's attack. Mastering this allows for effective application of Aikido techniques in various situations, enhancing overall proficiency in Aikido.
